A little bit of gardening

Plants do grow! In our garden some of them seemed to be taking over, like triffids they have been creeping over the ground swallowing up lesser plants! In the front garden the hebe, beautiful shape as it was had encroached the stone outside the flowerbed and also swallowed up most of the Japanese anemones. It was time for the chop. Once that was done, secateurs in hand, I surveyed the back garden. It was the heather that caught my eye. Many years old but still not a very tall plant it had taken over the lower part of what may once have been a rockery but is known to us as “the slope” or “the bed with the (tiny) apple tree”.

Little did I realise how tenacious and strong those roots were. This was not a five minute job but one that kept me busy for quite a few gardening sessions. How strong those roots were, how firmly they clung to the  poor soil and the odd rock!

Here in the garden was a lesson about strong roots and how we need firm foundations in our faith.

Matthew 7:24-26

New International Version

24 ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
