When he was about 80, the late Bishop George Sinker spoke to a group of clergy in the Potteries. As he was about to start his address, the large rubber band round his Bible broke and some pages fell to the floor. Having carefully replaced these, he commenced his talk. I have never forgotten his first words, which were spoken with a knowing smile.
“When your Bible is falling apart…you aren’t”
Are the things that we rely upon to hold us together, like the perishable rubber band that can snap unexpectedly? Or are we held together by the eternal loving truths revealed to us in Holy Scripture?
